St. Lucia's Must See Attractions and Activities

St. Lucia’s natural beauty continues to attract many thousands of visitors to its shores each year. Exploring the island will not only reveal its natural wonders, but will provide you with an insight of an eventful historical background which has shaped the cultural and daily lifestyles of St. Lucians.

Anse Chastanet SoufriereSetting some time aside for an excursion will be one of the many highlights of your visit. Although St. Lucia is only 238 square miles (616 square km) in size, there are so many attractions and activities to choose from that you may find yourself time constraint to cover them all. Any attempt to cover all the ‘Must See’ attractions in a day may result in a stressful and unsatisfied day. That is one thing you are guaranteed and as such, the challenge isn't worth it. Therefore, plan accordingly and do what interests you the most within the time you have available. Enjoy!

Tips:
Technically, you can drive around the island within a day (early morning to early evening) however, it is impossible to cover all the “Must See” attractions during that time period. As a visitor, you have a few options to choose from, each offering a unique experience:

  • Rent a car or a small SUV and take the challenge of touring on your own (using a guide map and talking to the locals; asking for directions, etc.)
  • Use a reputable tour operator or an authorized taxi driver to select and arrange a guided tour (an option which gives you the benefit of exploring with someone knowledgeable)
  • Get a St. Lucian friend to take you around (i.e. if you are spending time with a local family or friend).

When you are planning for that one-day excursion, depending on the type you choose, be sure to have some of the following items with you.

  • A camera - digital, film, or video cam
  • Plenty of bottled water (it's hot out there)
  • Sunscreen, insect repellant, large hat, sun glasses
  • Some loose change and cash (small bills are advisable)
  • A swimsuit, large beach towel, and Ziploc bag
  • Snorkelling gear (these can also be rented from marine tour operators)
  • A belt or waist pouch to carry your cash, ID card, etc.
  • A large plastic bag to keep your garbage as you travel around (do not liter).

Wear light cotton clothing (T-shirt, shorts, and a good pair of running or hiking shoes). Also, food and drinks are available throughout the many restaurants located island-wide therefore, there is no need to pack any; unless you are going hiking.

Exercise all relevant safety precautions. Be vigilant as you move around the island and keep an eye on your belongings. Do not wear expensive jewellery and carry large sums of cash. Lock up your [rental] vehicle when you are far away from it. Be a responsible visitor and enjoy St. Lucia!
