Historic and Natural Sites on Saint Lucia

All of St. Lucia’s heritage sites offer a slice of interesting history, thanks to the French and British. Some of the natural features are still mysteries to our visitors, most of whom still remain amazed at the beauty of nature’s creations. The entire island is covered in numerous sites and ruins which are a result of several decades of fierce warfare for the possession of St. Lucia including those which are a result of natural forces. There are many interesting points to choose from including plantations, towns and villages, and buildings however, there are some must see sites that should be part of your historical and natural discovery tour.

Morne Fortune

Morne Fortune (locally referred to as ‘The Morne’) was one of the principal battle grounds between the French and the British for possession of St. Lucia. Sitting at the top of The Morne are the remains of Fort Charlotte, whose construction began under the French and continued after the British forces took possession. The site and buildings from the fort have been restored and renovated to house the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College which, also includes a monument that commemorates the 27th Inniskilling Regiment’s possession of Morne Fortune from the French forces in 1796.

Pigeon Island National Park

Pigeon Island played a significant role in St. Lucia’s history. The entire island, prior to its joining to St. Lucia by the causeway, was fortified by British Admiral George Rodney and was used to monitor the French fleet from the neighbouring island of Martinique which, made an attempt to take over Morne Fortune during the Battle of the Saints. At the top of the island you will find Fort Rodney, a small well-preserved fortress and, within the park, other ruins of a few barracks, magazines and a signal station used by the United States of America during World War II.

The Pitons

Petit PitonThe Pitons are one of the most magnificent and impressive natural features in the world. Petit and Gros Piton are the remnants of two volcanic domes that were formed many thousands of years ago in two different locations along the east coast - Petit Piton in Soufrière and Gros Piton in Choiseul. The best and most popular locations for that breathtaking view are on your decent into the town of Soufrière along the west coast road. The towering twin peaks thrust directly from the sea at varying heights which gives them that beauty and unique character. It's a sight to behold and a mystery for the visitor.

The Sulphur Springs

The Sulphur Springs is a large area of hot springs and steam vents which is part of a huge caldera type volcano located within the Soufrière region. Visitors have direct vehicular and walking access, by guided tour only, to the field packed with a series of boiling pools and steaming vents, while learning about the historical significance of the area. The Sulphur Springs also offers visitors several hot mineral springs (down stream) for a therapeutic sulphur bath which, is best taken early in the morning as the water is much cooler. The Sulphur Springs emit large amounts of harmful gases including carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide therefore, visitors should exercise extreme caution when visiting the Sulphur Springs.
