Sir William Arthur Lewis is honoured as St. Lucias Nobel Laureate in development economics, for his outstanding contribution to the social and economic development of St. Lucia in particular, and the world in general. He lectured at the London School of Economics, the University of Manchester, and Princeton. He spent 5 years as the Principal and Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies and made a significant contribution to the establishment of the Caribbean Development Bank, and the pursuit of political unity in the Caribbean. In 1978 he was knighted by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and in 1979 was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics Science. Sir Arthur Lewis passed away on June 15, 1991 and was burial on the grounds of the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College (named in his honour) on Morne Fortune in Castries.
