Saint Lucia's Economy
Tourism is the fastest growing sector of the economy with agriculture and manufacturing making a significant contribution to employment and gross domestic product. Construction activity continues to increase with the development of the tourism sector and the implementation of several capital infrastructure projects.
In the 1980s St. Lucias economy was heavily reliant on its agricultural sector, particularly the banana industry which once accounted for nearly half of islands gross domestic product. Although St. Lucia continues to adapt to global economic changes which has negatively affected the banana industry, it still continues to dominate as the leading Windward Island banana producer in the Eastern Caribbean.
At present, St. Lucias economic diversification program includes the development of tourism, construction, light manufacturing and, financial services.
